What Small Businesses Can Learn from the Adult Industry?

buisness marketing tips for small businessesThere’s a phrase I’ll bet you don’t see every day. Once you get past the “Did he really just say that?” stage, though, I think you’ll start to see that the adult industry has a few more merits than less-than-scantily-clad women (assuming you consider that to be a merit to begin with, of course.) The adult industry has proven itself to be one of the most resilient, creative, and frankly intelligent pioneers of internet marketing, and if you can manage to put aside their questionable morals you’ll probably find you can learn a lot from their success. Don’t worry – the following content is safe to read with your grandmother by your side, so no need to send Nana into the other room.

Consistent content updates. Okay, this one is big (no pun intended.) Whether it’s for SEO purposes or for the benefit of your readers, both Google and people visiting your site love to see new content. Adult sites know this and are diligent about routine, consistent updates that keep their viewers coming back for more. You can do the same to keep your viewers interested. Sure, it doesn’t have to be an update every hour, but a few new articles, blog posts, or even short updates per week can do wonders for increasing your readership and your rankings in the search engines. Remember – you don’t need to convey a groundbreaking insight every time you post something new. That doesn’t mean people won’t come to check it out, and it doesn’t mean that people won’t continue reading your site’s updated content either.

Free samples. Anytime the word “free” pops up, whether it involves porn or not, peoples’ attention will be grabbed. Adult sites are masters of offering free content to draw their viewers in and then converting them into customers with a promise of “unlimited access” for a few dollars a month. Perhaps the namesake of “teaser” content, they offer a sneak-preview of their goods (eh… too easy) in order to let their customers experience what a paid membership would be like. You should be doing the same with your products and services, offering free trials or at the very least free information (did someone say “blog”?) to encourage people to give your brand a try.

Quick adaptation to new technology. I don’t mean to state the obvious, but the adult industry is certainly a flexible one. They’ve optimized their content for every device out there, be it PCs, Macs, cellphones, or even iPads. Their video streams at optimum quality because they’ve put in the time and effort to make sure that their users are getting the best experience possible, and they constantly look for new ways to present their content through new technology and trends. Sure, your company might be more friendly, but is it more user-friendly? Make sure your website and products are up-to-date with the technology that’s popular today.

Don’t get me wrong here – I’m not saying you need to start watching porn in order to run a successful business. You might, however, find that the adult industry deserves a bit more respect than they’re given – these guys certainly know how to run an online business!
